Electrophoresis Machine Essay Example for Free

Electrophoresis Machine EssayGel electrophoresis is a laboratory performance utilize to separate biological molecules with an electrical true. In this lesson, considerably review how agarose change electrophoresis works and introduce the equipment necessary to per course of study an electrophoresis experiment. Separation of desoxyribonucleic acid molecules of different sizes s decease packing be achieved by using an agarose colloidal gelatin. Recall that agarose is a polysaccharide that understructure be used to form a gel to separate molecules based on size. Because of the gelatin-like nature of agarose, a solution of agarose can be heated and cooled to form a gel in a casting tray. Think of casting the agarose gel like pouring hot gelatin into a mold. The hot agarose liquid is poured into a casting tray. at a time the mixture cools, a thin agarose brick leave alone form. To ensure theres a place to put the DNA in the gel, a comb is placed in the agarose liquid before it cools. Each tooth in the comb will become a hole, or well, in the solidified agarose gel. Once cast, this gel is placed inside a piece of equipment called a gel stroke. An electrode one positive and one negative resides at each end of the gel box.The wells are always oriented, so theyre farther from the positive electrode. This ensures that the DNA molecules in the well must travel through the majority of the agarose gel, thus providing sufficient time for separation. Air isnt a slap-up conductor of electricity, so we cover the gel with electrophoresis buffer. Electrophoresis buffer is a salt solution. It isnt fudge salt, but the salt ions can carry an electrical charge just like salt urine can. The salt in the electrophoresis buffer completes the circuit between the positive and negative electrodes. When the electrodes of the gel box are connected to a power supply, electricity flows through the electrical circuit, causing the negatively aerated DNA molecules to move into th e agarose gel. The DNA molecules continue to travel through the agarose toward the positive electrode as long as an electrical current is present. Recall that shorter DNA molecules travel through agarose faster than longer DNA molecules. In this way, agarose gel electrophoresis separates different DNA fragments based on size.Once the samples are loaded, the electrical current supplied by the power supply not only moves the DNA samples through the gel but the dye molecules as well. Note the colored lines that appear. These lines do not represent the DNA fragments. These lines represent the dye in the loading buffer that was used to foresee the samples during the loading step. Once the gel run is complete, the agarose gel can be removed from the gel box and soaked in an ethidium bromide solution. Recall that ethidium bromide is used to visualize DNA. Ethidium bromide molecules intercalate, or insert, between the nitrogenous bases in a DNA molecule. In summary, gel electrophoresis is a laboratory execution used to separate biological molecules with an electrical current. Together with a gel box and a power supply, an agarose gel can be used to separate DNA molecules based on size. Loading buffer enables scientists to insert DNA samples into the wells of the agarose gel. Once the electrophoresis procedure is initiated, the dye in the loading buffer forms a dye front that is used to determine when the procedure is complete. When the electrophoresis procedure is complete, the agarose gel can be soaked in an ethidium bromide solution to visualize the DNA bands on a UV box.

Globe Theatre Essay Example for Free

Globe Theatre EssayWe do not know much about Shakespeares life. He comes from the small provincial town Stratford that lies on the Avon. His father was a workman, and he was a division of the town council and he was also the mayor of the town for three years. Shakespeare just about likely went to Stratford Grammar School, which can unsounded be seen in the town, however we do not know much about what he conditioned in school. In 1582, when he was 18 years old, he married Ann Hathaway who was 7-8 years older she was the oldest girl of a wealthy farmer. Their first child was born the year after, only six months after the conjugal union later they also had twins. There are several explanations as to why Shakespeare traveled to London, but most explanations are anecdotes from recent times. Some researchers believe that he became a member of a theatrical caller-up that was visiting Stratford. The first time we here about him again is in 1592, and at that time he is a well-known person in London. He is mostly known as an actor and as a playwright, but he was also the owner of The Globe Theatre.Shakespeare wrote 37 plays comedies, tragedies and historical dramas. His plays have something to add everyones tastes there are exciting plots, strong emotions, colors and comedy. Shakespeares themes are love, nature, power and the responsibilities that come with it. The central theme is humans and, especially after 1600, the bitterness towards the humans is most definitely felt. nearly 1611 he returned to Stratford, possibly the same year as he wrote The Tempest, which can be read as his goodbye to the theater. He lived his last years in his home town, and died in 1616. He is buried in the Church of the Holy Trinity, and above his grave on the left side of the church, lies his epitaph.

Struggle for Free

Struggle for Freedom EssayIn the short story Flight by Doris Lessing and Dubliners An Encounter by James Joyce, have many of the same literary techniques employed through the themes and imagery. Thematically, these devil short stories be very similar because they both are to the highest degree youth growing up which leads to escape or freedom during the childhood and adolescence days. Lessings story is about a grandpa who is possessive of his granddaughter and does not want her grow-up. Because of this, he tries to control her because he does not want to be al unmatched, and most importantly because this was his put up granddaughter out of four to mature. As for Joyces story, it is mainly about the relationship between Father Butler and the boys, where the boys are faced with boredom at school and are spurred by excitement found in magazine stories about the American Wild West, two young boys skip school to fuck off a unhorse to The Pigeon-house. Their school boy lark a nd youthful egocentricism are destroyed by an encounter with an aging lead astray who tells them that boys were too young to have sweethearts. In addition, both of the authors use descriptive words to create imagery, which in addition shows how the two stories are similar. Some examples of descriptive imagery from Flight are and Dubliners An Encounter is It will generate apparent that this is what these stories are about when evidence is provided by referring to the each story to support these statements in the text.Similarly, the themes in both short stories illustrate flight in sensation case and freedom in another, during their adolescence years of the characters. This shows how the characters move on to live their sprightliness in Flight or the transition from boys to men (bigger boys) in Dubliners An Encouter. An example of this is in Flight, when the grandfather disapproves of the granddaughter (Alice) going out with the postmasters son (Steven). With this, he runs to his daughter (Lucy) and argues that Alice is just a young girl and that she needs to stop Alice from making a mistake. On the other hand, the grandfather is the one who has made the mistake with all the watching over her, he has overlooked that she is a young muliebrity who has fallen in love. The dialog that shows his unease at her growing up and making new life changes is belowLucy, he said urgently. Lucy . . . Well, what is it now?Shes in the garden with Steven. Now you just sit pile and have your tea.He stumped his feet alternatively, thump, thump,on the hollow wooden floor and shouted Shellmarry him. Im copulation you, shell be marryinghim next pg. 386In addition, the age of Alice is brought up, which shows that Alice is in her adolescent years and is ready to take flight. This is found when the grandfather says Shes eighteen. Eighteen. A similar smudge occurred in Dubliners An Encounter is when the narrator (one of the boys) says the pursuit The adventures related in the lite rature of the Wild West were remote from my nature but, at least, they opened doors of escape. The summer holidays were near at hand when I made up my mind to break out of the tiredness of school life for one day at least. It is known that the story took place in their childhood years going on to their adolescent years, because the quote shows that the boys are growing up since they did not budge the younger boys. This shows that they were excessively growing up.As quoted in the story Mahony began to play the Indian as briefly as we were out of public sight. He chased a crowd of ragged girls, brandishing his unloaded sling and, when two ragged boys began, out of chivalry, to fling stones at us, he proposed that we should charge them. I objected that the boys were too small, and so we walked on, the ragged troop screaming after us Swaddlers Swaddlers thinking that we were Protestants because Mahony, who was dark-complexioned, wore the silver badge of a play club in his cap. Pa rt of this that made this so effective was the imagery.Another similarity is the imagery, and through the literary techniques, the authors utilized. From beginning to end, there are many examples of imagery nonetheless, not all will be mentioned. With Lessings story, one can read a description that she has used and easily visualize what she is talking about. In the introduction, she describes the columbary and it is birds with the words tall wire-netted shelf on stilts, young plump-bodied bird, cold coral claws. Later on, there is a description of Steven thought of by the grandfather, which quotes red-handed, red-throated, violent-bodied youth. At the end of the story, she describes the sky and the land in the eyes of the grandfather with the words cloud of shining birds, shrill cleaving of wings, dark ploughed land, darker belts of trees, bright folds of grass, and cloud of motes of dust. As for Joyces story, he gives detailed descriptions of imagery of the day of the adventure. One scene that has several descriptions of imagery used the words foresightful grass, mild sunny morning, frail canvas shoes, tramload of business people, tall trees, little light green leaves. Joyce also describes Dublins commerce area as curls of woolly smoke, brown fishing fleet, big white sailing vessel. legal Transition Sentence Linking IdeasMain Points connected to thesisBack up the text referencing to storyWhat causes these similarities and/or differences? What effect (or cost) do they have on the subjects? Personal Ethics Essay Example for Free

Personal Ethics studyPersonal morals comes from inside and ar influenced by our every mean solar day life and people around us. The directions we sire as a child helps to form and begin our awareness of ethics. My upbringing memoirs and experiences instilled a well-built persuasion in family structure and significance of family in general. I was fortunate to be born and brought up in India in a traditional Roman Catholic family. My father was a doctor and he died of heart set on when I was ten years old. My mother was a registered nurse and I have three aged brothers and one younger sister. My mother went to the Middle East to work as a nurse and had to channel us in a boarding school. I missed my mother a lot plot of ground I was in the boarding school. That was when I decided what I wanted to do. My only ambition was to fail a nurse to be with my mother. I unceasingly used to watch my parents caring sick people. My parents endlessly reminded me to live in Christian faith. They led us by example all the time, providing precious lessons rattling to my development. My parents taught me to treat others as we would want them to treat us. I also learned from my parents that every individual is grave and we should love and respect them. I strive to live by those set of laws, though it is not always easy. My faith also influences my philosophy. I mean in theology and God has a plan and social occasion for every one of us. This is the basis of my ethical practices. Each individual cultivates different cultural, spiritual and personal set from their induce life experiences which add to their world put one across and philosophy of treat in their practice. To me ethics is my own personal belief structure. Knowing our own personal values is critical to every person. My clean compass in nursing offers highest priority for the wellbeing of affected roles. My moral courage helps me to speak up, stand up for my personal belief and moral values and br ing active change in my work place. The personal and professional values, my relationship and behaviors to others and my morals help me succeed in my personal and professional life. Our conscience acts as a judge for from separately one one of us. We are responsible for our actions. I believe that God is using me as a woodpecker to flush for the needy by providing me the familiarity and competency to promote healing. I also believe in the power of prayer. My patients used to tell me I am always smiling. I believe that it is the gift of God and being a nurse is, a calling not just a armorial bearinger. World view is a personal insight about meaning and reality. It helps the person to interprets, with his or her own eyes, a personal belief about the world. My personal worldview is shaped by my Christian religion, origin as an Indian, circumstances, experiences, and educational activity and philosophy. I accept God as the center of the universe. I believe that I am a good mot her for my three kids, faithful wife to my husband and an excellent nurse. I also believe in afterlife. I take pride in my profession. My nursing philosophy comes from my desire to care for others. I consider that nursing care is based on concrete evidence that is provided within a respectful framework. I always treat my patients the way I wanted to be treated if I am in that berth.Nurses are honored to interact with patients and families at some of the most unguarded points in their lives. cosmos considerate of that vulnerability is beta. Being respectful of my health care team is also important, as I consider that each of us play a fundamental role in the care of patients and families that we provide. I believe that God is using me as a tool to care for the needy by providing me the knowledge and ability to promote healing. It is essential for the nurses to understand their own selves so that they are able to take care of their patients better. I believe that spirituality pla ys an important role in the nursing profession. I think that the care of the soul is the beauty of the art of caring in nursing. The values such as integrity, responsibility, trust, reliability, and honesty are some of the personal values, which will determine how we face the world. Reliability and responsibility are very important to ones professional and personal life.Culture is something that a person learns from his family and surroundings, and is not inbuilt in him from birth. My upbringing as a Christian in Southern part of India, active participation in church activities and Catholic schooling have helped me to value human dignity and assist me to take right decision in my personal and professional life. Awareness of different rules about how their members coexist with each other and interact with each other. Some cultures believe that discussing death, making a life story will can invite death to the person who is ill. Looking at the life in different ways should be esteem always (Runzheimer Larsen, 2011). cultural diversity and differences in personal values can direct our relations with patients, family, and co-workers. Cultural competence is the ability to provide effective care for patients and families and our co- workers who come from different cultures. To understand different cultural beliefs and practices requires flexibility and a respect for others viewpoints .Ethical issues occur in everyday practices. An ethical dilemma is described as a type of stead that involves being in between two correct courses of action that leads the person to learn the right move and still be wrong at the same time (Purtillo, 2011). This can convey a lot of distress as it encompasses both ethical conflict and conduct. The ethical decision what we concord should respect the patient and family desires, physicians belief and concepts on life and death in our own view. Many situations arise in the critical care where nurses and doctors are obligated to make e thical decisions in a short period of time. Few years back I came across a situation in our ICU. A 90 year old woman from nursing home got admitted with history of treble strokes with weakness on her right side, emphysema and difficulty in swallowing. She was demented also. Her admission diagnosis was inlet pneumonia. She had two children and her son was the health care proxy who was living in California and he couldnt come to visit her mother because of some personal situation.Patients daughter who was living topically was taking care of her. The daughter wanted to place the feeding tube and treat for every problem. We respected the daughters decision. We started her on antibiotics. We placed the feeding tube and and started feeding her. Day by day her respiratory status started deteriorating. The attending physician contacted the patients son over the phone and explained the patients condition in detail. Apparently, we found out from him that the patient had a living will that give tongue to she did not want any feeding tube or even antibiotics in a situation where her quality of life was poor. Fortunately patients son came with her living will and our hospital ethics committee had a talk with her family especially the daughter. Because the patients wishes were clearly stated in the living will, she was made comfortable and transferred her to a private room to allow the family to be with her all the time and she died peacefully after one day.In this situation, the daughter wanted to treat her mother even though she knew about her wishes and she did not tell us anything about the patients living will. She was acting unrealistic in this situation. The decision was tough for the daughter in this situation. In my view the physician made the right survival of the fittest to contact her son that put an end to her sufferings. Nurses can make satisfactory solutions to the different ethical problems through creative and knowledge based approach. Each nurse has the responsibility to optimize the caring response and issue damage to the patient. . Nurses are leaders and vigilant advocates for the delivery of dignified and humane care. Nurses actively participate in assessing and assuring the responsible and appropriate use of intervention in order to minimize unwarranted or unwanted treatment and patient suffering (American Nurses Association, 2001). The significant impact we make in the lives of our patients and their families in their vulnerable situations and the positive encouragement I get from my nurse manager, co-workers, patients and families keeps me moving in my profession.ReferencesAmerican Nurses Association (2001). code of ethics for nurses with interpretive statements. Threats to Urban Bird Populations

Threats to urban Bird PopulationsEmily Bailes, Ann Bailey, Matheus Blezer Plumm, Tom McClellan-West, Lizzie Yarwood demonstrationThe enigmatic creatures of the sky, gentlewomans be creatures that argon treasu vehement by some around the world, by some as cultural symbolism, differents a hobby to indulge in and some just find their presence a pleasant addition to a grey and largely urban world.Human colonisation has had a coarse impact on nature, gentlewomans included, with some able to utilise the new urban habitat to undischarged way egress feral pigeons (Columba livia domestica) exploit waste products and buildings as a place to nest. However, some species require found it oft harder to adapt to the runty terrors that argon present within the ever increasing urban environs. In recent reports, the conservation status of 246 hissing species were evaluated of which 52 (21.1%) were placed on the Red list, 126 (51.2%) were on the Amber list and 68 species (27.6%) were p laced on the Green list (Eaton et al. 2009). Over a period of 35-45 years, there were 28 species with statistic bothy signifi provoket population declines of with child(p)er than 50%. One of these species is the Turtle Dove (Streptopelia turtur) according to the CBC/notice board trend it has showed a severe decline in abundance since the 1970s (Figure 1), and it is a priority species in the UK Bio diverseness Action Plan. In the period of 2002-2012 the Turtle Dove had an 80% decline in population coat in the UK.Whilst there are some threats facing urban shucks populations, there are quaternity pick out threats that feature been focused on in this review. Cat predation, windowpane collisions, habitat loss and usual human flap all fill variable effects on annulus abundance and have been discussed in the following paragraphs.Predation by FelinesWhilst there are several high risk threats to urban razzing populations, the most severe is that of cat predation. Cats have long been known to have a prejudicial ecological impact. They are responsible for multiple cases of extinctions in ground nesting birds in island habitats, where they come into contact with species possessing belittled or no defence mechanisms against predation. This inevitably leads to extinction. The current global impact of free-ranging domestic cats on bird deathrate is pictured to be up to 4 billion birds, annually ( disadvantage et al. 2013). In the UK alone it is estimated that crosswise a 4 month period, up to 100 million prey items are caught by cats, 24% of these cosmos bird species (Woods et al. 2003). With cats bringing home an average of 13.4 prey items per year (Heezik et al. 2010), this can have a forceful impact on wildlife populations. One study that focused on the bird populations of a typical urban UK village found that 16% of birds caught in a year were House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) which are a red listed and highly endangered species (British Trust for Orn ithology 2002) (Figure 2).It was also found in the same study that cats were responsible for 30% of Passer domesticus deaths in that area. Cats are also responsible for the deaths of many other red listed species such(prenominal) as the Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) (British Trust for Ornithology 2002) (See fig 3). Another more worrying issue is that the number of bird deaths emergenced if that mob was providing food for birds (Woods et al. 2003). This is especially troubling as cat owners trying to economize endangered species may be doing more harm than good. These trends all point to cat predation being the number one threat to urban bird populations. However, research has been conducted that advises that the impact of cats on ecosystems may not be wholly negative. As an apex predator, an animal with no natural predators of their own, cats have free reign to hunt in UK ecosystems without business of predation. As well as suppressing the abundance of birds they also frequently p redate other animals and some mesopredators such as rodents. Whilst their impact on bird diversity and population is clear, they also play a key ecological role in the suppression of birds natural predators (Ritchie Johnson 2009).Window CollisionsWindow collisions are considered to be the second largest cause of bird fatalities in urban areas (Loss et al. 2014). This however may not be accurate due to the lack of quantitative estimates and research on other continents (Bayne et al. 2012). There have been some attempts to estimate the number of fatalities per year within populations, however the US and Canada have had some input. Klem JR (1990a) estimated a put of 100 million to 1 billion birds killed per year within the USA, which was later considered to be a materialistic estimate (Klem 2006). Bayne et al. (2012) believed these estimates to be unlikely due to a lack of research in other geographic areas.Windows pose a threat as birds do not perceive glass within their vision, a nd they pass on tick off windows and corridors as a route to other habitat areas (Klem et al. 2009). Reflections from windows are also perceived as a continuation of the sky-both of these things occur during weak hours (Machtans et al. 2013). At night, windows become a source of light contaminant which is particularly a problem for migratory birds (Loss et al. 2014). Upon collision, birds suffer fatalities due to head traumas, intracranial pressures and bleeding on the brain, rather than the broken neck explanation (Klem 1990b), fortified by the terminuss found by Veltri Klem (2005) in which 91% of birds found dead from window collisions had no skeletal or cervical fractures.Urban environments, and the increase in buildings that feature glass, are proportionately linked to collision mortality judge (Hager et al. 2012). Glass is considered to be a non-selective lethal hazard by Klem (1990a) who found that sex, age and resident status does not affect the mortality rates of win dow collisions, neither is there a differentiation between smaller and larger species. However, this result may not be universal, with data but collected from two different buildings in differing locations. It would be favourable to take samples from a range of buildings in a number of locations around the world to see what impacts exist to which species, because although there is plausibly no difference between small and large species in basis of collision rate, those collisions impacts on individual species could be more profound.Whilst being a threat to individual birds in large quantities globally, in the US there is a lack of research into the effects of this particular mortality along with other collisions on population dynamics, with one study going as far to suggest that collisions with man-made structures, including windows has no discernible effect on the population trends in North America (Arnold coat 2011).Bayne et al. (2012) explain that more research needs to be do ne to obtain a reliable estimate for bird mortality caused by window collisions. Research can then be done to grasp a better perspective of what the mortalities are doing to the population numbers. This should also be done in other locations to give more clarity on the issue, and provide greater understanding moving forwards.Habitat LossHabitat loss is becoming a big issue over the world due to urbanisation from human development. On average in the united States, urbanised areas have as few as 35% shoetree coverage, with another 118,300km2 of forest land expected to be lost in the undermentioned 50 years. Forest land is important as not only does it provide shade, it also provides occult nesting areas and food (Lerman et al. 2014). Habitat fragmentation and habitat loss not only causes a community diversity loss within the animal kingdom, it removes the nesting areas for these birds, leaving them vulnerable. Bird feeders that can be found in peoples gardens can help to reduce t he lack of food caused by the removal of plants and trees, of which birds and their prey feed from. However this cannot prevent, or even counterbalance, the decrease in the diversity of species which are lost and replaced by non- innate species (Shochat et al. 2010). In Malaysia, nearly one-half of their land has been urbanised and changed by humans, causing a loss in biodiversity. However they have created little pockets within the urban areas for wildlife, such as nature reserves, topical anesthetic pose and plazas. Although, it has been noticed that exotic plant life is not popular with the native insects and their prey-which impacts majorly on the bird population. Despite exotic plants not helping to increase native bird numbers, they are still being planted for ornamental reasons and as part of their local plants scheme so this does not help with the conservation of native birds (Idilfitri Mohamad 2012).Human DisturbanceHuman disturbance is a threat to bird species in urban areas and can come in many forms ranging from contaminant of waterways to introduction of non-native species into the environment. Habitat fragmentation and introduction of exotic species to urban environments has seen a decline in urban bird populations. Within urban areas there are a range of habitats, from parks containing primarily native tree species, to recently certain streetscapes that do not contain any mature tree species. Here, many of the tree species found are non-indigenous. Other habitats that can be found in an urban environment are streetscapes with only native tree species, and those with only exotic tree species (White et al. 2005). Higher species richness of birds and abundance is observed in habitats with more resources, such as parks, with the greater availability of food and nesting sites. In habitats with non-indigenous tree species, nectarivorous birds are less prolific as flowers that they specialize in are not present. Insectivorous birds are also less gross in such habitats native insects have evolved with native plants, so impart be absent where these trees are absent, thus insectivorous bird species will be absent. Recently developed and exotic streetscapes often lack the shelter required for certain bird species, so these birds are operate out of potential habitats (Bhuller Majer 2000).Bird species require specific flora species within distinct habitats that meet all of their requirements some bird species are more tolerable of disturbed habitats with exotic species, whilst other species are parasitic on the native flora and undisturbed habitats. Urbanisation may lead to an increase in non-indigenous bird species and the simplification of bird communities if exotic plants are planted and streetscapes continue to be created. Therefore native plant life must continually be planted and parks protected in order to maintain mingled bird communities and conserve native bird species (White et al. 2005).The effects of light po llution from urban areas on birds are also of particular concern. A study conducted on European Blackbirds (Turdus merula) showed that birds exposed to 0.3 lux of illumination at night time had an irregular molt pattern with respect to individuals that were exposed to a dark night. mannish European blackbirds production of testosterone is stimulated annually by light, in a assist called photore divisoriness. After the breeding season, the birds stop being photosensitive, and so the gonads are diminished whilst they are not in use. Gonads re-develop after photostimulation by shorter daylight hours in the autumn and the increase in day length thereafter. chase long periods of exposure to light at night time, the reproductive cycles of male birds stop, with testosterone concentrations in the plasma at a minimum. Thus, it can be suggested that artificial light could confuse birds, as they miss important photo-cues for photorefactoriness. Without these cues, testosterone concentration s go on at a minimum, gonads fail to re-develop and the bird will not disgorge come breeding season. The light pollution caused by urban environments is a threat to urban bird populations, as it leaves individuals unable to reproduce through confusing their photosensitive reproductive cycles. (Dominoni et al. 2013)ConclusionIt is apparent that the threats mentioned in this review all have the potential to impact urban bird populations around the world and have all been reported in literature to have a negative effect on birds. However the threats mentioned have a great deal of complexity about them due to the interchangeable effects each threat can have on one another which may make distinguishing the effects of one individually difficult.A great example of this is the provision of bird feeders in gardens. Whilst the benefits of providing food will be greatly received by a number of bird species, it can increase the frequency of predation by cats (Woods et al. 2003). It is also sh own that providing bird feeders near urban buildings can increase the frequency of bird-window collisions (Klem 1990a). However, a dynamic could be present, where the fear factor of cats is influencing the birds into quick flight paths that lead them to collide with windows. It is here that the two dynamics of the threats are interlinked.Mortality rates of birds killed by window collisions with single building may be small, but deaths from window collisions with several buildings across the urban environment accumulate to give a high serving of mortality. To reduce this high percentage of mortality, something must be done to the structure of buildings (e.g. urban residences) so birds do not confuse window panes as a pathway, thinking that it is clear for them to use (Loss et al. 2014).Furthermore our constant introduction of exotic non-native species to parks and streetscapes changes the habitat and prey items available to urban birds which will further increase their population de cline- some bird species have easily adapted to changing conditions, whilst populations of others have been disturbed with the loss of specific habitats. Not only do the exotic species disrupt the local ecosystems, they also replace habitats that would otherwise be suitable for many native invertebrates that are an important source of food for birds. Whilst this threat isnt as obvious or as directly damaging to birds, it is still a serious threat to be considered and further researched. foreign plants are leading to declining native bird populations, but in spite of this they are still being planted for ornamental reasons (Idilfitri Mohamad 2012).Urbanisation may lead to an increase in non-indigenous bird species and the simplification of bird communities if exotic plants are planted and streetscapes continue to be created. Therefore native vegetation must continually be planted and parks protected in order to maintain complex bird communities and conserve native bird species (White et al. 2005).All things considered there are a number of aspects that need to be addressed. Bayne et al. (2012) pointed out how there is a lack of quantitative estimates and lack of research in other geographical areas as reasons why window collision mortality and its effects on a population may not have particularly accurate data. The statement could be extended to various aspects of urban bird population. Threats mentioned above would benefit from extra research, however this is difficult to achieve when the practicalities of working in an urban environment, resources and time are taken into consideration.ReferencesArnold, T.W., Zinc, R.M. And also identify the causes of the conflicts and disputes in Hong Kong construction industry. Fin onlyy, this study will also identify the way of conformityal conflict management and the dispute resolution methods to be used.2. Conflict Management in Construction Industry2.1 The definition of conflict managementConflict may be defined as a contest amidst people with opposi ng needs, ideas, beliefs, values or goal. Conflict on team is unavoidable however, the results of conflict are not predetermined. Conflict might increase and lead to non-productive results or conflict can be beneficially thawd and lead to quality final products. Therefore, learning to manage conflict is essential to a superior team. Though very few people go looking for conflict, more often than not. Conflict results because of abstracted communication between people with regard to their needs, ideas, beliefs, goals, or values. Conflict management is the principle that all conflicts cannot consequentially be resolved, just now learning how to manage conflicts can decrease the odds of non-productive escalation.According to Algert, N.E., and Watson, K. (2002), Conflict management involves obtaining skills cogitate to conflict resolution, self-awareness about conflict modes, conflict communication skills, and establishing a structure for management of conflict in your environment.2 .2 The causes of conflict in constructionConstruction is significantly antithetic from manufacturing, in which the same franks are produced a thousand judgment of convictions. Also, construction does not grant for the change of variable while holding the epoch out fixed in order to study its effects. The nature of the construction referred to earlier so conflicts among owners, design professionals and contractors are general. To suggest that these parties are prone to confrontational interaction and conflict would be a major statement in the construction industry.Owners are crimson arguing with their design professionals over design service justify of errors and neglect in design services rendered, aesthetic considerations and bud line up overruns.(p.4-white)Accordingly, Howell et.al (1998, cited by Vorster 1993) proposed a nomenclature of elements that take up four causes behind conflict in the construction environmentIn fatten up scope definitionThe design professionals responsibility to define and design the project scope so as to meet the owners functional, budgetary, time and environmental project criteria. When the design professional fails to meet their responsibility, the owner is almost always dissatisfied with the result, with the effect that unforgiving correspondence soon ensues between the parties. Also, when the scope of the work is un distinctly, this presents an unhappy relation for future between the owner and the contractor, arguing about the scope and quality of the work, and whether in fact the work is properly defined by the contract documents prepared by the design professional.Inappropriate contract typeContracts are endemic as causes of conflict within the construction industry almost every stage of the construction process is regulate by an agreement of some sort. Some of the areas of contract dispute are breach of contract in contract clause interpretation, inspection of work clauses, indemnity clauses, payment of supplies, and liability to third parties, just to divulge a few possible areas of contract dispute.Poor communicationInfrastructures are unique products with more entangled production process than other and most of building products are a combined effort of some(prenominal) peoples or organization. So legion(predicate) professionals beat contribution to do a building in sundry(a) capacities. Among construction team members, each may have different aim in relation to their profession, but their main aim should be to complete the project within a given plan. Conflict between team members may arise when their objectives are inconsistent. Also, their interpretations of contract documents, terms, and conditions can diverge, leading to discrepancies and conflict. In short, all causes of conflict within an area are inter link up.UncertaintyFor external a) Environmental concerns b) Social impacts c) Economicsd) Political risks e) withstand f) Regulationg) Unforeseen come in condition. For int ernal a) Error in design b) Construction methods and workmanshipIn figure 10.3 which is one modelling of what the owner should consider when identifying potential conflicts. We can identify which of them may be realized at the interfaces among the multiple participants in an agency construction management delivery placement. Certain conflicts in the kind among the owner, designer, CM and trade contractor can be eliminated in various situations if a different delivery system is selected.(P.205-White)2.3 Methods of conflict management used in construction industry in HKIn the construction industry, ask anyone if they completed a construction project without any conflict. The answer 100% of the time will be NO. The successful project managers must be implement strategies to avoid or monitor conflict in their construction project. The following rough-cut steps are used by the project managers when developing a successful conflict managementConflict identificationConflict depth psyc hologyDesign and implementation of a conflict managementMonitoring and recapitulation of the conflict management.(P.202-White)Prevention is the beat out method in the management of the conflict in construction industry. The methods includeDispute review boards or advisorsNegotiationcalibre (Total quality management and quality assurance)Procurement systemswhich are all non-blinding process.Baden-Hellard (1988) emphasized that construction industry has a built-in potential for conflict arising from the differences always present in values, principles and interest. Thus, when differences arises from unforeseen events, no matter how well the clients, design team and contractors have managed the project, better methods of resolving the differences are needed.Dispute review boards or advisorsIt is virtually impossible to complete a large construction project without having any disputes develop between the parties. The DRB is a panel of two nonsubjective individuals who are selected by the parties to the construction contract, usually the project owner and the general contractor. The project owner will stipulate in the specifications for bidding the project.DBR provide the processes and mechanisms to not only help to settle disputes but also can provide a method to prevent the potential conflict from ever happening. The potential conflict to the DRB means that plausible argument at each construction stages and the quality of the presentation of claims. The first meeting of the DRB usually takes place well before the beginning of the construction project and will continue to meet until the DRB members are well-known all of the aspects of the project. After the project begins, each DRB will usually meet on a regularly scheduled basic such as once each month or once each quarter, etc. Besides, site dress down can ne made depending on the requirements of the project.NegotiationNegotiation needs to be carrying out to resolve the conflict before it reached a more seri ous stage and change into dispute. The parties are required to semen together and approach an agreeable settlement through communication. The following two example shown a impartial negotiation between the main contractor(MC) and a subcontractor(SC) who is unable to meet the objective in the contract.Example ASC I will not be able to off this process on time.MC You must be finish theses according the time schedule.SC I need three supernumerary weeks to finish it.MCYou cannot have extra three weeks.SC If I do not get three weeks, i can not complete this process on time.MCNo, you will complete as scheduled, if you really cannot finish it, we will collect damage and replace you.The example A is a position-based type of negotiation which will go around in circle until one of parties abandons its position. It is not clear why the parties are even arguing.Example B wedge shape I will not be able to finish this process on time.MC What are the reasons and why can you not finish as sched uled?SUB My supplier will not able to deliver the materials until next week so I need three extra weeks to finish it.MC You should know the schedule is very tight for this project. Are there any other suppliers who can deliver on time?SUB Yes, but the suppliers are more expensive than the damages given by finishing late.MC Although you are responsible for reaching the target, I also understand your predicament. Actually, I know some other suppliers that might be able to solve these problems and I will contact them as soon as possible. The example B is an interest-based type of negotiation which can be reached a mutually agreeable solution even the source of the conflict is uncovered.According to these two examples, a successful negotiation should result in a solution pleasurable to both parties that will not damage their descent and implies collaboration, assert and common objectives.Quality (Total quality management (TQM) or assurance)According to Gardiner et al (1992), the most confliction stages are identified within the organization, well followed by the issue of quality and control. One of the most confliction stages is the quality issue so a good and suitable quality management or control system should be issued. It can reduce the frequence of conflict.TQM is an extensive management system whichFocuses on meeting owners needs by providing quality services at a comprise that provides value to the ownersIs compel by the quest for continuous improvement in all operationsUnderstand everyone in the organizationObserve an organization as an internal system with a common objective rather than as individual parties acting to maximize their own murdersEmphasize teamwork and a high level of workers.Procurement systemsThe procurement system is one of most effective methods in stripe of conflict so it should be located in the earlier stage of the project life cycle.According to Bennett et al (1990), the procurement system built up the roles and relationships, which constitute the organization. It establishes the overall management structure and systems, which helps to form the overall values and styles of the project. The Procurement System for Construction provides stake for woof of appropriate procurement and contract strategies, and nomination of an appropriate Principal in the contractsPreparation of tender documents and contracts based on standard formsSelection of contractors and consultants with proven performance recordsEffective management of contracts, including clause commentaries, sample letters and checklistsMaintenance of an effective performance management system through monitoring and reporting andResolution of contractual claims and disputes.(NSW Government (2000), Procurement system for construction. Available fromNSW Government, NSW Government ProcurementWeb site http//www.nswprocurement.com.au/Procurement-System-for-Construction.aspx Accessed March 13, 2011.)3. Dispute Resolution in Construction Industry3.1 The def inition of Dispute ResolutionDispute resolution is about identifying the root causes of conflict and preventing and managing conflict with the purpose of resolving disputes or conflict during the construction process in order to avoid post-construction claims, litigation, and related be.According to Whitfield(1994), resolve disputation can use all in ceremonial resolution methods such as negotiation and choice dispute resolution(ADR) or formal resolution methods such as litigation and arbitrament.3.2 The causes of dispute in constructionDisputes are often the outcome of ill considered procurement practices, inadequate preparatory formulation and design activity, or poor project and commercial management procedures. If the conflict happened in construction site, all parties are agreed to each other. There is no further conflict because objectives of both party vex same. But if one or both party becomes intransigent, then the conflict may turn to a dispute. In other word, dispute s are come up when parties are unable to manage their conflicts properly. Dispute can be defined as a disagreement between parties in connection with their objectives.Construction trial may create dispute between the parties in construction sites. According to Feld and carper Kaminetzky (1997), failure during the construction phase may includeOverloading.Improper temporary supports.Inadequate planning and execution of construction process. privation of inspection.Insufficient safety factors.Inadequate training of construction workers.Feld, J. and Carper, K. Fenn et al (1997) provides a synopsis of the findings of nine frequently citedstudies of the sources of disputes3.3 Methods of dispute resolution used in construction industry in HKAccording to Carmichael (2002), the step approach to dispute resolution as below. An attempt is made to resolve the dispute at the level at which it occurs, in a reasonable timeIf this fails, involve parties at a higher level with decision making authority, and the potential to settle in the interests of a commercial solutionIf this fails, proceed to an ADR approach using and independent third partyIf this fails, arbitrament or litigation will be used.3.3.1 Informal resolution methodsa) NegotiationNegotiation is a common dispute resolution method, which we all are using in every day. There is no neutral third party for the negotiation, only the disputants. It is also defined as a means to reach mutual agreement through communication, according to Down, L.J. (2009), (p.140-white)Negotiation is considered by most appropriate way to resolve any dispute in construction industry. It was because negotiation is not expensive and can be maintained relationship with the related parties. However, there are also negative sides of negotiation. For example, if the related parties negotiated a long and protected period of discussion, the negotiation will be fail because they are not blinding. Besides, it is an informal resolution method, it can allow any surprise issue or irrelevant points rising.b) Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)ADR is a collective term used to describe methods of resolving disputes which are alternatives to litigation and arbitration and which usually offer a less expensive solution. For exampleMediation This has appeared as an increasingly used form of dispute resolution, involving a neutral third party working to facilitate effective negotiations to enable a mutually acceptable settlement. In mediation, the parties explore options, measuring the strengths and weaknesses o f their respective cases.Mediation can save a great merchandise of time and cost in resolving a dispute and can also help the parties to re-establish trust and prevent damage to ongoing relationships.Adjudication This is a quick and relatively inexpensive way of resolving a dispute. The adjudicators decision is normally upheld by the dallys and so it is important to ensure that all the relevant facts are put in front of the adjudicator.Adjudication does not necessarily achieve final settlement of a dispute because either of the parties has the right to have the same dispute heard afresh in court. However, experience shows that the majority of adjudication decisions are accepted by the parties as the final result.(Powell, J. David. 2005. Boundary Dispute Resolution in England Wales Surveyors and Lawyers Working together to Resolve Problems. Proceedings of Cairo Egypt.)Because of the following potential advantages, it is worth considering using ADR early in a lawsuit or even before you files a lawsuit.Advantages of ADRBetter communicationContinued business relationshipMore options for settlementReduced costs in achieving settlementConfidentiallyControl of outcome and the process.3.3.2 starchy resolution methodsa) LitigationOn occasions, alternative dispute resolution procedures are not successful in resolving disputes, resulting with the parties resorting to formal litigation through the courts.According to Whitfield(1994), the process of litigation is from the issue of a writ to a hearing and then on to a judgment. One of the failures of the legal process has been the speed with which solicitors have been prepared to issue writ. After writ has been issue, the plaintiff cannot simply withdraw his writ and forget the matter. If he did so, the counterclaim would be found against him along with the cost. The related construction companies need to provide litigation support services for both formal litigation and alternative dispute resolution as followsProgramme tick analysisForensic researchPreparation of statements of claim and statements of defenceParalegal support.b) arbitrationAccording to Ashworth (2005), Arbitration is a legal technique for the resolution of dispute outside the courts. The parties refer the dispute to a neutral, wise(p) person (arbitrator or arbitral tribunal) who then gives the final decision (award) to which both the parties agree.Arbitration, in lieu of court proceedings, as the last resort to resolving disputes in construction contracts has been commonly used in Hong Kong as well as internationally.Although intended to be a less formal and more flexible alternative to litigation, arbitration can be as thorough and time-consuming as litigation, especially for construction disputes. The related companies should be employ the expertise in representing them in arbitration proceedings and handling the whole arbitration process from the appointment of arbitrators, drafting of pleadings, dealing with interlocutory pr oceedings through to the hearing stage and beyond.Where necessary, lawyers who undergo in construction disputes to provide the most comprehensive services to the company in arbitration.4. Conclusion individually construction projects are unique and complex undertakings. A unique set of drawings and specifications are used to describe each construction stages. The drawings and related documents generally performed by a general contractor and several subcontractors, many of whom have not work together previously. The unique aspects of each project and the unique constitution of each construction team are common reasons for disagreements to occur.Disputes can be generated in any environment indeed, conflict can occur whenever two individuals try to work together. These disputes often concern topics such as changes, differing site conditions, delays, and payments. Many researchers had attempted to determine the causes of conflict and disputes within the construction industry.Besides, H. Murray Hohns (1979) leads to the conclusion that the specific causes of the conflict and dispute can be largely traced to the following five sourcesErrors, defects or omissions in contract documentsUnderestimation of the cost by the client, the contractor, or bothChanges in conditions, (e.g. unforeseen ground conditions)Claims from end-users (legal rights of owners and tenants)People involved in the construction process. When confliction is arise in the construction industry, the importance of proper conflict recovery method and compliance with formal procedures cannot be over-stressed. If disputes proceedings become unavoidable, it should be some comfort to know that proper alternative dispute resolution will be a favorable condition rather than a drawback.

Strategic management and information systems at Tesco

Strategic prudence and reading systems at TescoOutsourcing ICT is quite comm tho used by organisations as an approach to strategic management. Assess the advantages and disadvantages that outsourcing flush toilet bring in developing effective uses of nurture systems in an organisation much(prenominal) as Tesco. What do you understand by companionship management and noesis management systems? To manage this many companies use the help of opposite companies to grow in this straggle of competition. This is called Outsourcing. If a firm does not privation to use its internal resources to build or operate information systems, it tolerate hire an orthogonal organizatio n that specializes in providing these run to do the work. The ferment of turning over an organizations computer center operations, tele discourses networks, and/or applications development to external vendors is called outsourcing (Laudon Laudon, 2005).This definition go afters the considerableest part of Outsourcing, but what happens when we refer to ICT Outsourcing?First of all, what is ICT? education Technology (IT) is probably one of the most used b shows in business nowadays. Information shouldnt be confused with intimacy, unfortunately this happens occasionally. The verge information is used extensively in no formal speech. This, and the diametric meanings used, makes it enceinte to define. From my point of view after studying on this subject, information covers entropy to which meaning is as abridgeed, according to context and assumed conventions. noesis is derived from information. The term information engineering includes computers, ancillary equipment, softw are, firmware and similar procedures, redevelopments (including support services), and related resources. victorious under consideration the above we conclude that ICT Outsourcing send word be delimit as follows.Information Technology outsourcing is the concept of an organization contracting-out IT activities to a ternary party vendor, who in return provides and manages the services for a certain conclusion of time in replacement for a monetary fee. The deal crumb include the transfer of IT assets and hoi polloi involved with IT to the external entity. (Roland Booijen 2006)The main trim back in international businesses nowadays is to outsource their production answer as well as close to of their ser vices outside of their travelling bag country. The term outsourcing basically refers to the process of subcontracting goods and services from an outside provider, usually from a polar country. approximately companies choose to outsource because of its many advantages over the traditional process of production. Outsourcing gives you the incident to focus on other business aspects like the marketing process. By taking other parts of the business like production and other process away, you have more time to plan others steps of your company like how to contend your products in a more efficient way. This can give you the weapons to become a recognizable marketing powe r company.another(prenominal) advantage of outsourcing is that it allows you to choose professional level of processing or example according to the needs of your company. Outsourcing would mean to expose your production to external procedures that you whitethorn not know or considered looking into. This can provide first appearance capabilities for your business. This provides useful information on how to improve your products by use the acquire technological info and professional production means. These are some of the benefits that outsourcing can brink to your business. In companies like Tesco using outsourcing can benefit in many ways as this huge business colossus ever needs innovation, using outsourcing provides fresh ideas for them and also can keep them rivet on other parts of the business like promotion or marketing. As you study your way through using outsourcing you will ha ve to keep in mind that there are advantages to outsourcing and disadvantages of outsourcing. some(a) of the disadvantages of outsourcing are the following cardinal disadvantage is loss of management Control .Whether you sign a contract to have another company perform the become of an entire department or single task, you are turning the management and control of that operate on over to another company. True, you will have a contract, but the managerial control will belong to another company. Your outsourcing company will not be driven by the same standards and mission that drives your company. They will be driven to make a profit from the services that they are providing to you and other businesses like yours. some other disadvantage is hidden cost .You will sign a contract with the outsourcing company that will cover the details of the service that they will be providing. Anything not covered in the contract will be the basis for you to pay additional charges. Additionally, you will experience legal fees to retain a lawyer to review the contacts you will sign. Remember, this is the outsourcing companys business. They have done this before and they are the ones that write the contract. Therefore, you will be at a disadvantage when negotiations start. Yet another drawback may be the threat of Security and confidentiality .The life-blood of any business is the information that keeps it running. If you have payroll, medical examination records or any other confidential information that will be transmitted to the outsourcing company, there is a risk that the confidentiality may be compromised. If the outsourced function involves sharing proprietary company data or acquaintance, this must be taken into account. Evaluate the outsourcing company carefully to make sure your data is protected and the contract has a penalty clause if an incident occurs. hotshot more disadvantage may be quality problems. The outsourcing company will be motivated by profit. Since the contract will fix the price, the only way for them to increase profit will be to decrease expenses. As long as they meet the conditions of the contract, you will pay. In addition, you will stomach the ability to rapidly respond to changes in the business environment. The contract will be very specific and you will pay extra for changes. Another disadvantage is to be tied to the financial well-being of another company. Since you will be turning over part of the operations of your business to another company, you will now be tied to the financial well-being of that company. It wouldnt be the first time that an outsourcing company could go bankrupt and leave you holding-the-bag. One more disadvantage is bad publicity and Ill-will .The word outsourcing brings to mind different things to different people. If you live in a community that has an outsourcing company and they employ your friends and neighbors, outsourcing is good. If your friends and neighbors lost their jobs because they were shipped across the state, across the country or across the world, outsourcing will bring bad publicity. If you outsource part of your operations, morale may prolong in the remaining work force. Companies like Tesco can use ITC outsourcing in their intercompany communications, by using a system of comlinks or anything like that. Another possible use is better organizing stock and storage of items by using computer based systems, databases for storage and self items would be a great effective way of ICT usage etc.2. intimacy management and Knowledge management systems ( KMS) are a class of informational systems that refer to the application of managing informational acquaintance in an organization. Chrysler make Tech Cul, bringing people together virtually and face-to-face to exchange and build their collective knowledge in each of the specialty areas. In this case, the knowledge management effort was less focused on subprogram expertise or benchmarking than it was on bringing the experts together so that important knowledge was shared and amplified. Providing online forums for communication and discussion may form knowledge networks. The idea of a KM system is to enable employees to have limit access to the organizations documented base of facts, sources of information, and solutions. For example a typical pack justifying the creation of a KM system might run something like this an engineer could know the metallurgic composition of an alloy that reduces sound in gear systems. Sharing this information organization wide can lead to more effective engine design and it could also lead to ideas for vernal or improved equipment.A very good example in Tescos case is when they decided to implement an online tack togethering system that connected the customers with the warehouses and the suppliers. Some of the benefits of KMS systems are Increased order processing capacity, Reduced hardware cost , Increased flexibility in maintaining supplier relationships , Better integration of programs, increase reliability in day to day operations. The ke y aspect of KM and KMS is to convince existing long term employees to make use of such systems in order to produce/sell more and drive internet upwards. Such a challenged is described in the Tesco Case Study as far as the living service scheme is described in the context of making employees comfortable with the newborn changes in the way they operates so far. This was achieved by implementing their managers in the process, in order to encourage employees that they have some ownership over their workplace and was achieved with 3 day workshops. However one of the major drawbacks was that the managers had to face was the skepticism of the employees who viewed the firm scheme as suspicious. Trilogy, the meeting of companies that was outsourced for this purpose made sure that the solely process would like a completely internal Tesco-like procedure to mark that they had the employees full trust on the living service program.that unless the suspension specialists could communicate eas ily with each other across platform types, expertise would deteriorate. Providing online forums for communication and discussion may form knowledge networks. The idea of a KM system is to enable employees to have ready access to the organizations documented base of facts, sources of information, and solutions. For example a typical claim justifying the creation of a KM system might run something like this an engineer could know the metallurgical composition of an alloy that reduces sound in gear systems. Sharing this information organization wide can lead to more effective engine design and it could also lead to ideas for new or imp roved equipment.A very good example in Tescos case is when they decided to implement an online ordering system that connected the customers with the warehouses and the suppliers. Some of the benefits of KMS systems are Increased order processing capacity, reduced hardware cost, Increased flexibility in maintaining supplier relationships, Better integration of programs, increased reliability in day to day operations. The key aspect of KM and KMS is to convince existing long term employees to make use of such systems in order to produce/sell more and drive profits upwards. Such a challenged is described in the Tesco Case Study as far as the living service scheme is described in the context of making employees comfortable with the new changes in the way they operates so far. This was achieved by implementing their managers in the process, in order to encourage employees that they have some ownership over their workplace and was achieved with 3 day workshops. However one of the major draw backs was that the managers had to face was the skepticism of the employees who viewed the whole scheme as suspicious. Trilogy, the group of companies that was outsourced for this purpose made sure that the whole process would like a completely internal Tesco-like procedure to ensure that they had the employees full trust on the living service program.
